Alami is the protagonist and point of view character. He doesn’t look too different from the other Basergo, though he has shorter horns and a rounder face shape. I kept his design simple with no special markings because he it makes it him easier to draw. He is 42 years old in Keera years, which is the developmental equivalent of a human in their mid-20s. He thinks he has it all figured out in his life before the humans arrive and shake up his worldview.

He is the type of person to go out of his way to start a friendly conversation, even with someone he doesn’t know. He is a great listener and easy to get along with. However, he is not so great at replying. Most of the time, he prefers to listen. That skillset is great for his job as a sociologist.
His job, both before and after the humans arrival, is to study those around him and report back to the government about his findings. This is generally beneficial for everyone involved. The people get their everyday concerns heard by a representative, and Alami represents them to the government, who then decide which concerns to address and in what order.

Alami grew up emersed in city life. He feels the most comfortable around others. That is not to say he is unable to be alone without discomfort. He just prefers the company of other people over silence. He grew up within a higher social status environment than others. His positive and friendly nature means that others are generally forgiving of any misunderstandings. As a child, he traveled to the home continent of Orokuhchee, and was dazzled. From then on, he decided he wanted to travel for a living. Luckily for him, he achieved that.

His major weaknesses is social confrontation. He can handle it more easily as a third party, but he flounders if the conflict involves him any more deeply than him being an outside observer. He is also extremely afraid of becoming ostracized. His core belief is that how people perceive someone can influence, if not determine, who that somebody is as a person. His character arc will be grappling with the humanity’s past and his positive relationships with the humans. He will have to learn not only to accept exceptions to his beliefs, but also gain the assertiveness to tell the truth, despite how he thinks it might affect him and the humans he has grown to care about.
